Proserpine Girls Cricket Run Out for WBBL
Twelve girls from the Proserpine Junior Cricket were invited to travel to Mackay to be a part of the Women’s Big Bash League Brisbane Heat vs Melbourne Renegades game on Saturday Night, 20th November. This was the last of 9 WBBL games that had been played at Great Barrier Reef Arena over an 8 day period.

The girls were excited to run out onto the Great Barrier Reef Arena in front of over 1500 spectators. They were high-fived by Heater, the team mascot, before a Brisbane Heat player greeted them with smiles, words of encouragement, and an autographed cap. Not only could the girls see the event unfold on the big screen in front of them but it was broadcast live on Fox Sports as well. The girls then left the field and watched as the Heat produced a clinical effort in the field to demolish the Melbourne Renegades with a 43run win. We have heard that some of the girls went home and slept with their caps
The girls’ coach, Melinda Dwyer, who runs the All Girls cricket clinic on Wednesdays, was one of the scorers for the match and proudly watched on from the scorer’s box.
Proserpine Junior Cricket has had a focus on increasing the participation levels of girls in cricket and has seen a large increase in girls membership registrations. In just the last two years, female registrations have risen from five to twenty-four. On a Friday afternoon the girls play in mixed teams with the boys however creating our Wednesday girls only clinics last year proved to be very popular with the girls being able to play and not feel like they are being judged by the boys.
In the new year, Melinda is hoping to create an all girls gala day carnival with Mackay Cricket for the girls to play in. In a few years time we may be seeing one of our own walk out onto the Great Barrier Reef Arena playing in a WBBL match. For the girls, the sky is the limit and we want to encourage them to reach for their dreams anyway we can.
Proserpine Junior Cricket is still taking registrations for the season and children are welcome to come and try on Friday afternoons at 4pm at the Proserpine Cricket Grounds (during Terms 4 and 1). Contact Mark Valmadre (Secretary) on 0407 638 149 for more information.
